To be more accurate, we floundered around with an oversize flotation device each in water that was as flat as a mill pond; and as we were flaying limbs and making surfing look really, really hard, at some point a pod of dolphins swam past about 100m from the beach.
All 3 of us managed to stand up (albeit briefly) on a few occasions; I managed to take out my sister quite effectively before she retired having managed to head butt the nose of her board whilst riding a wave, which takes some doing and would have been hilariously funny if only I'd had seen it.
I'd like to say the video below, in which Tom and I both catch a wave (in the loosest senses of both the verb and the noun), doesn't do justice to the tsunami-like waves rolling in off the Pacific, but I know that it wouldn't convince anyone. Naturally there was one boy (around 8 years old) who glided serenely past us every few minutes, just to remind us how rubbish we were. Still, we had fun pretending we were surfers.
