Ok, here it is, at last - a koala montage. Vix complained about the pawcity (thank you, thank you) of koala photos on the blog, well, at last, here's the pick of the koala pics from today's walk. Koalas are shy enough at the best of times, and usually they're asleep (as the mother is here), but her cub provided plenty of entertainment as it was clearly bored/hungry and wouldn't sit still. So here it is:
Unfortunately my diving has been cancelled due to bad weather (too windy out on the reef), which is really frustrating. I had hoped to dive one of the best sites on the outer reef today, and also a century old shipwreck tomorrow, but it's looking unlikely I'll be able to do either whilst I'm here. I've done some more bushwalking around the island today instead - it's very hilly, hence there are some great views:
Magnetic Island was fortified during World War II, due to fears of a Japanese invasion (they did indeed bomb Darwin, killing a number of people); here is a gun placement from that time:
A bit over the bush walking, I tried bush running this afternoon, which was good fun and, with the hills and all the sand, suitably exhausting. I had a good view of the imaginatively named Mount Cook at the centre of the island. The street names, incidentally, are also works of genius - Compass Street, Sextant Street and my favourite - Mango Parkway. There is, of course, a Cook Street as well.
Finally, I was bemused by this sign - clearly the warning on the left is about 'stingers' (Japanese Man O'War jellyfish that frequent northern Queensland waters in the summer months); but it seems odd that vinegar should also be applied to anyone struck by a stray rugby ball while sat on the beach.
Sooooooooooooo cute I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGiven the number of your exclamation marks, I thought you might appreciate one more photo (well, it's a close up of the first one!).....
ReplyDeleteAwwww! It was worth the wait! I love koalas. And I don't want to hear anything about fleas and vicious claws! They is the best animals ever. Vix
