Recipe Corner

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. Almost every morning for the last few years I have started the day with a bowl of porridge, but I've recently changed to bircher muesli.

I first had this in Jervis Bay and found it a yummy and healthy alternative; it's also much appropriate for the climate (especially in February). It's also dead easy to make.

Half fill a large bowl with oats and pour in enough water so that they are just about covered

Grate an apple

Add a squirt of lemon juice (stops apple going brown)

Add the apple and some cinnamon to the bowl and stir

Cover and place in the fridge overnight, so that the oats absorb the water

Mix a pack of LSA (Linseed, Sunflower and crushed almonds) with some almond flakes and put in a sealed container (you can also add dried fruit)

The next morning you will have bircher muesli!

Add a few table spoons of natural yoghurt and about the same amount of the nut mix.  I often add some fresh blueberries at this point. Give it a good stir

Sprinkle some cinnamon on the top and you're good to go!
  Yummo!

And here's a healthy and easy dinner - steamed dumplings, fried rice and Chinese veggies (bok choy/snow peas). The dumplings are pre-made and steamed from frozen for about 15 minutes.

Shitake mushroom, chicken & coriander, and prawn dumplings

On Saturday I went with Gill's dad's cousin Simon to see the Foundation Cup - the pre-season NRL game between two of Sydney's oldest NRL clubs, the Sydney City Roosters and Wests Tigers. It was a windy and wet night so turnout was pretty low at the Sydney Football Stadium. Simon is a die-hard Roosters fan so he was delighted to see his team give the Tigers a fair old pasting.

A crowd of thousands a few hundred turned out for the game

And finally.... a kookaburra on our balcony

  1. Are you sure the muesli isn't the return of the dumplings?

  2. Porridge kicks muesli's ass any day.

    1. Well you say that.... and I would normally agree, but this is BIRCHER muesli. Very different from plain old rabbit-food muesli. Have you tried it?

  3. Are kookaburras not pests out there? Nic

  4. On the contrary - they are native Australian birds, that will eat pests as they such as mice, lizards, insects, snails and snakes. The laughing kookaburra makes a hell of a racket though.
