Here it is - the Newington College Centre for Ethics 2013 Programme (they spell it 'program' here... yes, yes, I know...). Jeremy, the Head of Philosophy & Religious Studies, has done an amazing job of producing what is to my mind the best line up yet.
David Tacey is an excellent presenter who I heard speak a couple of years ago at the Dialogue Australasia Network Conference; he teaches and writes about literature, spirituality and Jungian psychology at La Trobe University in Victoria.
Renown eccentric philosopher and educationalist Peter Vardy returns, along with the popular Australian social commentator Hugh Mackay. There's positive psychology and the ethics of judging (from a judge); but the highlight of the year for me is Baroness Susan Greenfield; I saw her at the Opera House in 2009 when she spoke at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas. She has done considerable research in to the impact of modern technologies on the human brain (when she's not sitting in the House of Lords) and given that we are now a BYOD ("Bring Your Own Device") school, this will be especially relevant.
So it promises to be an exciting year for the Centre for Ethics. I hope to blog on the public lectures throughout 2013, starting with the first lecture on 6th March.

Abbotsford Cove on Friday afternoon

Is it right that a discussion of ethics should end with a picture of a boat?
ReplyDeleteThe water may appear calm, but we are all trying to navigate our way across the turbulent sea of ethical uncertainty.... (there's a plane as well, by the way).
ReplyDeleteI'm disappointed you didn't invite me as a guest Action for Happiness speaker...all expenses paid.
ReplyDeleteI thought you'd be 'happy' to do it ex gratia.
ReplyDeleteLooks great! Am once again very envious of school children - the idea of sitting in a classroom learning or listening to these amazing speakers, when you're old enough to properly appreciate it, is very appealing.
