Savile & Satire

Asylum continues to be at the forefront of Australian federal politics - despite the relatively small numbers of people who seek asylum here.

Having finally managed to find a policy that works, the Labor government is now exporting asylum seekers who arrive by boat to Nauru, a tiny island state somewhere in the Pacific, for "processing". But this week they've had a stroke of genius - the government is to propose legislation that excises the 'continent of Australia' from 'Australia as a migration zone', in its bid to 'stop the boats'. Here's a great clip from Clarke & Dawe (John Clarke plays Immigration Minister/Minister for Semantics, Chris Bowen):

The Jimmy Savile story continues to feature in the news here, too. I wrote to Jimmy Savile once; I may have been about 8 years old. I wanted him to 'fix it for me' to have a day with Gareth Edwards - who is one of the greatest scrum halves to ever play for Wales and who scored one of the greatest tries ever too... for those who haven't seen The Barbarians v The All Blacks, 1973:

Anyway, I have been lucky enough to have enjoyed a subscription to Private Eye for the past year (a Christmas present from Gill). I think that it paid for itself for just this one awesome photo in last week's edition:
