Surry Hills

Saturday afternoon was spent in The Welcome - an Irish pub in Rozelle. Gill and I only went in for lunch (and a Guinness or two); 7 hours later we left. The Saturday afternoon band arrived as we finished lunch, which included the fiddle player from The Bushwackers (remember them from the Tamworth Country Music Festival?); and then we were joined by Jeremy and Dylan....

On Sunday Gill and I went to Surry Hills - a trendy Sydney suburb of uber-cool cafes, upmarket restaurants and well dressed gay men. I fitted right in. After the driest start to May in 150 years (we've had no rain since 24 April) it was looking and feeling much more autumnal.

Saturday saw the opening game in the rugby season, against The King's School. So just to give a taste of how rugby is regarded at my school, here's a "montage" from the 1st XV match big clash with St Joseph's College in 2010 - following which they went on to win the GPS competition:

  1. Crikey. That number 12 is gas. And a sizeable unit, too. Good to see him getting spear-tackled though. It shows the Joeys were up for it.

  2. Newington-Joeys is one of the biggest games of the year. That was our GPS Premiership winning game in 2010, when we won by 50 points or so, which I think is unprecedented. Joeys is our opposition this weekend actually,al though we're only in Trials at the moment - the GPS Competition doesn't start until July.

Some of our 'sizeable units' were made in Tonga; scarily huge, fast and aggressive - and off the field the loveliest kids you'd meet.
