Occasionally in Balmain I might be sat in a cafe or by the water on a Sunday afternoon and I see a boy from school; it's not unusual as it's only a few km away and Newington is probably the closest private boys' school by road from Balmain. However, when strolling down the road in a quiet suburb on the Gold Coast during winter, just south of the Queensland border and 850km away from the place, I don't expect to see a boy from school. Not one of the 300 boys that I have taught so far this year, admittedly - but one of the senior boys greeted me in Kingscliffe this afternoon, and very pleasantly asked if I was enjoying my holiday.
