In gladiatorial sacrifices, victims were tied to the stone in the foreground, given a sword with a feather 'blade' and then flayed by four men with obsidian swords. The heart was then ripped out by a priest who wore the victim's skin over his own; before emerging 20 days later in a dramatic representation of rebirth.
