I've been mostly using prawns marinated in garlic (cheaper at the supermarket than from the bait shop!), but have also tried chicken (marinated in oyster sauce and garlic) and soft plastics.
The ratio of time spent fishing to fish caught is not great. It's a learning curve. Or as Gill says, "all the gear and no idea".
Click here for the Google map of fishing spots I've tried around the inner Harbour and Lane Cove River.
Woodford Bay: rockwall and long shelf; probably better fished from a boat.
Woodford Bay
Longueville Wharf: Aussie's love their mullets. This one happens to be a fish. Longueville wharf is on the harbour and is a beautiful place to fish (from the park, rockwall or the wharf).
Gary Wilmot: "Hey Tony, I went deep sea fishing last week"
Tony Ferrino: "What did you do that for?"
Gary Wilmot: "Just for the......
....Halibut"
(aka Flounder; caught at Tambourine Bay)
Fishing with Patrick and Wayne at Burns Bay Reserve (5 mins walk from home)
