Whilst for those back home the fact that New Zealand is hosting the Rugby World Cup means that watching most of the games is only possible for insomniacs or die-hard fans, it's pretty much ideal here. Last Sunday was back-to-back rugby all day, and this weekend won't be much different.
However today is the annual GPS Athletics; this is not some high tech orienteering exercise, but the 'Greater Public Schools" Athletics Carnival out at Homebush, in the State Athlectics Stadium. All boys from each of the 9 GPS schools are required to attend, which, with staff and families will bring the number present to around about 20 000. Not bad for sports day. As a Housemaster I'm on crowd control duty; each school has it's own location around the track and this year we're on the final bend of the running track. This means, unfortunately, that we are not in the Grandstand under cover - today it's sunny with a top of around 30 degrees.
Assuming I avoid sunstroke, this evening is the Australia-Ireland game; Gill's parents are coming in to join us in watching the game at one of the local pubs. There's been some debate about who I intend to support; given that everyone wants England to lose I'm not sure I can bring myself to support the Wallabies against the Irish, given that the men in green will be the clear underdogs. It's not normally a problem in the Tri-Nations games, as I always support the Aussies agains the Springboks (obviously) and the All Blacks (or All Pacific Islanders). But World Cup games against minnows and less fancied northern hemisphere teams are a different matter. Unfortunately, the Wallabies can't meet the French before the final; and any red-blooded Englishman knows who he would want to win that one....
