Back to school today.... a bit of a shock to the system to be honest. I start coaching rugby this week - I have the Under 16 B team. We train twice a week and play on Saturday mornings. It's a very different set-up compared to the UK. Here are some of the big differences:
1) Kids make their own way to and from the grounds - no counting boys on to/off coaches at the crack of dawn
2) Medics for every game - no need for the coach to double as a doctor
3) The school has an army of around 50 parents who are qualified to referee - coaches never have to ref games
4) Admin support staff ensure all necessary kit is on the field ready at the start of practice. No need to hunt around for balls or cones...
5) Professional coaching assistants help to run coaching sessions
6) Head of rugby provides a structured lesson plan for each training session, based on a general plan of how the school aims to play the game
I took my new predator rugby boots for a spin this afternoon down at Birchgrove Oval (now set up for rugby, at last). I'm still hoping to play, but I intend to see how things go this week with work, as it could all be very hectic and I'm wary of overdoing things. It's Anzac weekend too, coming up, which means there's lots of stuff going on around Sydney (plus public holiday on Monday!).
