Australia Day 2010

No blog for several days, then two entries come along at once....

So: 'Straya Day, as it appears to be called, was yesterday, 26th January, and commemorates / celebrates (depending on whether you are an indigenous Australian or not) the arrival of the First Fleet in Port Jackson in 1788.

So I went for my morning coffee to find that John and Antony were cooking up a sausage sizzle at Bertoni's....

But it was too hot to eat there, so I went down the road to Gladstone Park to seek the shade of the Morton Bay figs...

With my new wheels I set off for the ocean, where the hordes had descended on Bondi.....

But I went snorkelling in Clovelly instead, where it was much quieter. When it had cooled off a little, I went up to Vaucluse, which is near 'The Gap' (the entrance to Port Jackson) to film my vidcast for the 6th Form assembly at Trinity - complete with Akubra....

And at sunset I drove down to Watson's Bay for fish and chip on the beach, and watched the sun go down behind the city and Harbour Bridge.

For those who are interested in a potted history of Australia and assuming it works, click on the picture above to see the video (be warned, it's not very interesting and a good example of why I don't work in tv).

  1. So jealous of your pictures - the weather looks gorgeous! I think my computer speakers are playing up, because I can't hear your video, but I'll try again later. Is your new car as good as your old one? - it has valiantly survived the snow and ice. :-)

  2. I do like the way the video cuts out before you say 'bye'.

You're back in the UK in June?! That doesn't give us much time to arrange a mass holiday out to Australia.

  3. Oh, and I miss our 'sausage sizzles'. John and Anthony are such bitches.

  4. What's happened to this blog? It used to be informative at least. Now all we get is the occasional picture of a one-armed man cooking sausages. It's like Channel 4. Sort it out.

  6. Do you mean the one on Old South Head Road in Vaucluse, on a corner? Been there for fish & chips and grilled prawns... it was awesome!

First week is going well: I'm deploying a combination of 'shock & awe' and 'hearts & minds'....
