For one of my courses I have chosen to write an essay on Australian attitudes to their convict heritage, and the way this is reflected in novels, film and heritage sites. So with Nicola visiting it seemed to make sense to combine research for my essay with some sightseeing to Fort Denison and Hyde Park Barracks. Here are some photos from our trip to Fort Denison, a tiny island in the harbour which was blown up and converted in to a fort in the 1850s. There were fears of a potential Russian or even American invasion at this time; later in the C19 a perceived threat from Japan or China.
