Avenue Q - Sydney Premiere

When I said I was going to the theatre to see a show, I omitted to say it was actually the opening night of Avenue Q in Sydney (the Broadway musical with puppets - it's basically an adult version of Sesame Street).

I didn't quite realise what I was going to until I arrived to find a yellow carpet, a lot of very swankily dressed glamorous types (for which read 'Australian celebrities') and a large number of people with massive cameras. Timeout (Sydney) described the night as "a star studded affair" - and it goes on "... with a colourful crowd of queer punters". Just my cup of tea then.

Here is the link to the photos from the yellow carpet (I can't believe they didn't take any of me) - I've also absolutely no idea who any of these people are, except two of them whom I was there with, and unless you're Australian neither will you.

The seats were awesome and the show was brilliant; I'm not usually a fan of musicals but this was in a similarly irreverent vein to The Producers ("Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" reminded me of "Springtime for Hitler"); genuinely funny and superbly performed.

So after the show, of course, was the after party at The Ivy (posh Sydney bar/club) with a free bar all night (champagne, obviously). It was a great night.

  1. Can't believe you're writing about Avenue Q so positively - I offered you the chance to come with a group of us and you sent me a "it's not really my thing" email!! Glad you enjoyed it - it's a funny show. x

  2. Well it's not really my thing... but given I can count on one hand the number of people I know in Sydney, the ticket was free, and it was a chance to see some B list celebrities and drink free champagne..... x
